Morning Session General Themes: · Water is the next "oil" · Blue is the new green · Water scarcity is one of the biggest issues · Access to potable water in developing countries · Water laws - illegal in Utah to collect rainwater, as aquifers have the biggest need · Water as the canary/litmus test for our environmentally progress · Problem: Economics aren't there, because the costs are so low around most parts of the country · Problem: there is a huge long-term case to be made for water conservation, but the short-term economics are not compelling. · Tiered pricing in Colorado for residential users, but not for commercial customers · Depending on where you get your water in California can have a huge impact · Water (and any other resource) is more likely to be wasted if the total and true costs of the resource are not made transparant and highlighted to the users. · Investments in water preservation for companies or consumers ultimately lead to energy savings as well, leading to a virtuous cycle · Issues around not only quantity of water, but quality as well · Grey water recylcing in a pooled environment: shared capacity and infrastructure/cost · Water is really a local issue · Desalination technologies? Energy effective? · Data centers need water - is virtualization & cloud computing the answer long-term? · 2% of all electricity usage around the US · Moore's Law: Doubling of need for storage capacity thus creates a doubling of energy footprint required to every few years; densification concept · Waterless urinals · Opportunity for water transfers: selling of water · New product innovations: ex: water-less laundry system (through ionization) at Diversey · Going "upstream" to solve the problem: ex: setting up a fund for water conservation, getting local businesses who rely on clean water supply to contribute funding, and then using the funds to invest in the protection and preservation of the forestland and aquifers upstream of the city, so that those downstream companies dont have to invest as much money to clean and purify and treat the water supply: proven to have significant cost savings.

XYZ hotel is part of ABC association and we have agreed to minimize our water/waste footprint… 10. Would you please do this “BECAUSE”… a. Give people a reason, and they are more likely to comply
