Short-term incentives for the longtermThis is a featured page

We started asking ourselves:

How do we incentivize customers and employees to buy into green initiatives?
How do you feel about incentives for creating behavioral change?

- The climate change theme by itself doesn't tracks lots of attention.
- You need to walk a fine line to convince or make apparent that the environment needs to be taken care of.
- Tania Tarawovski from the New England Aquarium said that internal recognition is valuable but when validated within the industry is more powerful.
- Kohn cites on his book "Punished by rewards" that we need to be careful when we reward good behavior. As soon as the reward disappears, so will the behavior.
- Rewarding small groups who have engaged in a sustainability model (would that work?)
- Is important to have in mind which short term incentives will lead the company to long term sustainable behaviors.
- There's a lack between the connection of climate change and individual costs.
- The real key players are: Oil companies, chemical companies and the others.
- The only way to change this situation, the only driver is legislation.
- Einstein said: You cannot solve a problem with the same mindset that created the problem on the first time.
- Expose people to the true cost of consumption. Employees don't have any idea.
- Microsoft has incentivized with bonuses some server managers for achieving energy efficiency in certain buildings.
- Corporations are motivated by money.
- Interesting way to incorporate a sustainable company: BCorp certification.
- Sustainability is not only a green theme. Companies are asking themselves, how can we endure for the next 10-20 years?
- Financial Incentives or Penalties in order to change behaviors.
- Entrepreneurs and small companies are more willing to follow sustainable behaviors. As soon as the companies turn big, these behaviors get lost.
- What are we, as individuals doing for a better world? What if everybody knew what to do to be better and how are we currently doing? Is there a source that tells us what can we do in an easy way?

Real examples:
- In a Boston based company, when buying a new building, the c-level and mgmt will invest $$$ more to buy a better, greener and more sustainable choice because they believe that this decision will attract smart people and smart customers that aligne with their goals on sustainability. And it works!
