(Additional notes from final seession/wrap-up)
What did we learn?
- green certifications hot topic
- theme of not reinventing the wheel
- behavioral impacts on sustainability
- debate between whether being green means being economical or if it means being something different from a company perspective - two things that impact behavior are peer pressure (more than awareness ) and procedural knowledge = these two things foster
behavioral change
- “stealth green” is a better color than “green green” to facilitate change
- role of government in being green – how it is helping over how it’s hindering progress
- cooperators thrive in the long term (survival of the fittest for cooperators)
- how do we widen the circle of those attending these types of gatherings? expand the circle from do-gooders to include everyone –
everyday people
- electricity reduction vs. paper reduction debate during lunch (paper won)
What does this mean for where we go now?
- benchmarks, certifications, and standards – we need to continue this discussion and answer this question
- where do we set the bar on calling something truly green?
- need to discuss how we maximize outreach for sustainability and make it affordable for everyone - conflict between businesses quest for growth and the unsustainable growth of consumption – need to be able to convince
companies that they can be successful without selling more “junk’

Next Steps
- creation of working groups around some of the specific topics from the event?
- sustainable consumption chat?
- goal of this event is to get ideas and innovations flowing faster through society – how do we accelerate the spread of the best ideas (D. Strelneck, Ashoka) and turn them into action?
