Looking at Triple Bottom Line
What is disconnect between external (products, green products) and internal efforts - what are differences?
In San Francisco lots of local resources - Bay Area
- PG&E has credits for new, better energy efficient savings
-
San Francisco Green Business Certification -
300 been registered. 3000 in line to get certified- Santa Clara Green Business program - not as complicated and not as long a wait
- their certification was not too hard. time consuming but not overwhelming
What is value proposition?
- going paperless? Is this is a good idea?
- "lightbulb fatigue" - even if it hasn't happened people are tired of it
Intuit -
Quickbooks tool that gives you your carbon footprint. Gives you actions on ways to help it. And provides marketing collateral.
- Getting research and now trying to figure out what helps and what works
What makes more sense for companies? Set the bar high or small, incremental processes
- Large, big movements and initiatives or small check-list of goals?
- Tier structure might make more sense - helpful for businesses but certification can be all over the board
Certification programs do have different lists for different industries? See above for SF Green Business Certification
What tools can larger companies deliver to small businesses to help and motivate them to go green?
- Maybe discounts? Can larger companies provide discounts - like Salesforce.com, Intuit, eBay
What other tools?
- Going paperless?
Other, non-cost issues - more employee health and
- Indoor air quality. Low-VOC air quality, dust, etc?
California Cleantech Open - provides access to resources and consultants who can be helpful
Very difficult to "go green" - takes more time, is more expensive
BIG difference between financial cost and economic cost - in small business many times only see financial cost and NOT economic cost (i.e. cost on employee health, cost of energy on environment, etc.)
- finding ways to bring these two costs more inline
Any good small business for sustainability networks
- Code Green - for software developers to help small sustainable organizations
- BALLE - Business Alliance of Local Living Economies
