Initiatives to reduce employees' Energy footprint?
Companies don't do a good job on incentivizing employees in green initiatives... how can we change it?

What's working currently at Tech Networks of Boston:
- T-pass program - 50% reimbursement of their T-pass for employees to reduce carbon footprint. Highly accepted program among employees.
- Electric bicycles for technicians.
- The recession is a fantastic opportunity to communicate the lack of resources. It is an opportunity to leverage our New England values of "not wasting things".

Wal-mart:
- Constant training of employess

EDF:
Paper calculator.org. Interesting tool to understand your environmental impact asociated with your paper consumption, type of paper use, secondary fiber amount, energy consumed by using certain papers, etc... (Staples uses it and leverage this tool to convey tangible environmental benefits to customers when they purchase paper. They also use it to help customers in their decision process.)

Staples:
- Sings don't work. Nobody looks at them. They became part of the background.
- What other initiatives can work to engage employees?

HULT:
- Everything that has to do with cultural change is emotional. When we talk about footprint, Kw/hour, etc.... it's intellectual, not emotional.
- We need to bring it down to emotional and visual (i.e. film in Asia and e-waste).
- Read book Green to Gold: The poor are the most impacted.
- We need to make the link on how the climate change will impact you.

Sodexo:
- Flirting with how far should we go with the emotional theme: Crisis, Depression, Sadness...is it to harsh?

Stop & Shop:
- Energy conservation team is build on one individual, the same as oceanspray.

MIT Sloan (Person in charge of energy efficiency and recycling programs).
- I can not get my people in my own office to follow the recycling guidelines.
- For women is easier than for men. The same as for young people vs old people.
- Showing bad and difficult pictures doesn't work.

Mass MEP:
- It's a matter of understanding what's important to the employees in the green arena.
- How to motivate them?

Debate & Ideas>

- If your behaving in a sustainable way... how do you see it? It is easy to see it in manufacturing... how do you see it in Finance?
- There's a need to create an individual standard to compare yourself in a green field.
- Make the environmental engagement fun and easy.
- Make it as a competition: have a energy efficiency day. The employees that accomplish the established goal, are somehow publicly recognized the next day (color balloons that all the peers can see... people will start looking for those who didn't get the balloon).
- Use Carbon Rally - Online Tool where different teams can compete internally.
- We need to show the individual level but also show the bigger picture.

Summary:

- Posters don't work!
- Competition among employees... IT WORKS!
- The need for use different engagement initiatives for different ages, genders, preferences.
- T-pass and transportation subsidies
- Timberland website... green tree prizes. Visualizing the benefits.
- EcoFont
- WattzOn/ Cooler webtool
- IBM tool called Ondemand. Tool around environmental issues... employees can access tools to embrace them and work with small biz, communities, etc. Employees now need to devote certain amount of hours to this program. *As an organization how can you provide tools to help your employees to engage in certain activities to preserve the environment.
- Showing the amount of money in waste motivates companies and their employees.
- The CEO involvement is CRITICAL. If an e-mail comes from the CEO's office with the message... it has power and convinces employees and people.
- The CEO needs to be the key person handling CSR initiatives and if this initiatives can be embedded into the company's strategy they would have more power and employee engagement.
- It is important not to get rid completely of the visuals in the company (posters). But do parallel activities to reinforce the initiative.
- A discussion on: should we incentivize an employee for following the green initiatives even when it's part of their job? At Sodexo... even if the company's employees don't perform at the established goals, the company needs to keep providing resources for the employees to follow these initiatives.
- It is not what you achieve... is how you do it.
