How much is enough? (Consumption and happiness). (Jenkins A)This is a featured page

genesis for idea: efficiency can't be the whole solution. Still need to address consumption. How do we handle forceasted consumption levels?

Policy:
  • redefining GDP as GHP-how is consumption tied to happiness. happiness and economic health tied to GDP growth-what if GDP growth comes from hurricane reconstruction.
  • Buy local? But what are the implications of buy local for those that depend on our trade $ in the third world?
  • Regional solutiions? City planning and transit infrastructure.
Culture/human nature:
  • can we overcome human desire to consume and convey social status that way? If not, how do we fight that?
  • People buying discretionary items with non-discretionary income. EX: 15-20% of houses account for 50% of GDP. ONly the top part can afford non-essential consumption.
Business-
  • their model depends on consumption-design for obscalescence - products don't last. Closed loop method like Townsend transition movement? But limited success?
  • Multi-naitonals control flow of many resources. Is this better than having those resources under state control?
  • There are very few companies that service our basic needs. Most service wants. How do we change that?
Other institutions:
Churches:
Conflicting philosophies-the Jesus that was a beggar and preached kindness to the poor or the Gospel of Wealth?

Readings: Confessions of an Eco-Sinner - tracing what you consume and how you came to be able to consume it.
