Highlights from Speakers
Catalyst “Assessing Sustainability”:
Vonda Lockwood, Director Innovation & Sustainability
Wal-mart Roadmap: what is our trash and what do we need to reduce our trash. It’s about process changes.
- Landfill waste reduction program: Super sandwich baling process (this process allows WM to compress 32 recyclable items between layers of cardboard creating bales that are sent to certified recyclers). WM tested incineration: it’s expensive à not the direction the corporate want to take.
- Energy: solar arrays + wind energy
- Organic program: WM isn’t locked in any particular solution. Right now we think about Composting but if a better solution comes in 6 months, we have ability + capacity + flexibility to change. WM sustainability pgm is successful because it has become part of the culture. Customers are not all ready for sustainability at same time à work with vendors & community to educate them (cf test reusable bags in Denver vs Forth Smith). It takes time to implement programs at WM bc of the nb of WM stores: ex=3years for WM to work with Feeding America donate food with quality
- Questions: - What is the biggest item that goes to landfill at WM? Jan 21th 2011 WM will be able to know per store. Currently it’s parking lot trash, bathroom trash, glass, contamination. - Top line benefit? WM Sustainability measures are good for the bottom line (cost neutral or cost saving). Right now WM is losing money on top line (PR, goodwill).
Panel: Michelle Harvey (EDF), Zach Freeze (WM), Lea Jepson (WM), Greg van Buskirk (Clorox)
1. What defines a good pdt? - A good pdt is a pdt we have transparency in supply chain (energy use, water use, where it comes from, etc..). How easy is that? It can be very difficult. Trying to do traceability all the way: ex: traced turkey breast through supplier of supplier of supplier. Not an easy task to do but the more we do it and the more people do it the more visibility we have. - Network is a tremendous advantage: getting to know the suppliers, know what is the right question to ask, getting the right people in the room, leverage with the suppliers. WM wants to share the best practices of their suppliers. - When suppliers come & say what they want to use: have you done a LCA on that to get a clear picture on what are the opportunities of this pdt?
2. How do you stay ahead of the curve? - NGO partners, suppliers, let them bringing it to us. Like a toolbox, working together helps us make a better decision. To the buyer: tell us what is important to you. On the Supply Chain side: what is important to the supplier. Talk what they need and what their language is.
3. What’s the business case for pdts that are not hazardous? - Zach: Concerning “other chemicals”, it’s difficult; we can’t say if we remove this chemical the customer will want it more. Evaluating the product, why this is here. What’s the long term goal to work toward better solutions.
4. Plastic bags at WM: - Not all customers are ready to use reusable bags. WM follows regulations, not forced to do it now. WM want to encourage customers to use reusable bags, not force them.
Panel “Building Sustainability Into Your Business": Elizabeth Sturken (EDF), Catherine Greener (Cleargreen Advisors), Chip Jones (Dean Foods), Sean Stephan (Waste Management) -
Catherine: What is my biggest problem to solve? à that becomes my hot spot. What are my strategy, product, process? Are my people fully engaged? What is gonna to be cool in 3 years? How make sustainability cool? What defines what is gonna to be cool?
Book= 8 dimensions of quality by David Gavin à #8 = Perceived quality (‘better for you product’ ‘better for your kids product’). Consumers don’t understand sustainability à you have to translate for people. -
Chip: How did you start and what is your hot spot? Our scale gives us an opportunity to do things better -
Sean: We are investing in new technologies. We are doing landfill gas extraction (anaerobic digestion generates power). We partner with several institutions.
Questions - Create job to support the environment. LCA doesn’t take into account the local economy.
