Notes for Green Technologies – Affordable… Quick ROI

How do you motivate corporations to embrace green technologies? Government regulation can not be the answer. The technology needs to be able to have a quick ROI (2-3 years max).

Commercial Buildings:
Point of View from Building Design - Business customers redesigning space are most interested today in achieving compliance. Lighting is important to saving money. Understanding how businesses can use and financially justify sustainable investment. It’s all about the financial metrics and solving the customer problem. Education is vital.

Commercial Building Green Technologies with good ROI (2-3 years?) –
 HVAC Control
 Wireless Ambient and Occupancy Lighting Control with Demand Response Lighting that can be scaled to 20,000+ lights
 Awnings
 Green Building construction
 Green IT infrastructure – i.e. Cisco energy wise infrastructure
 Star Compliance - Computers, Copiers, and other office machines

Other Technology Discussion Topics:

 Complex distributed event processing verses publish and subscribe
 Xerox “ubiquitous computing” concept is similar to “smart appliances”
 An examination of historical methods of generating energy indicates that bio-char (wood cellulos) may be a viable off-set of production. Utilize in a new and existing methods of generating more energy or processed into other components such as plastics. Waste stream or low-value plants (weeds). Intercept the waste stream for other uses.
 Center for Maximum Potential, Friday openhouse. Looking at alternative construction materials.
