Green ITThis is a featured page

Defining Green IT. Two definitions:
1.0 Greening IT
2.0 IT for greening

IT is responsible for 3% of greenhouse gas emissions, but the proper use of IT technology could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15%.

Producing IT equipment is not green and never will be. However, there are many things we can do to reduce the IT carbon footprint. Right now, IT departments are not too concerned with energy reduction because utility bills are not part of their budget.

Is cloud computing greener? Yes, because more shared infrastructure owned by organizations that invest in energy efficiency and employ best practices. Most companies who are not in the industry can't achieve these efficiencies on their own.

Trends? The accelerated use of existing "green" technologies (e.g. virtualization, duplex printing, PC power management.) Cloud computing is another trend to help green IT.

We also discussed whether it was possible to go overboard with Green IT 2.0 technologies such as teleconferencing and telecommuting. Is human interaction the same?
