Green Homes and Buildings - Seattle
SOLUTIONS STATEMENT SESSION:
[Climate Action Planning; Greening Homes and Buildings]
-Challenges in addressing topic
-Issues explore further
economic issues, big corporations can't compete within a competitive market
lack of information for people (specifically in green building, where to turn to for answers and information)
-Key question lead to developing solutions
Burning Questions:
-Relative roles of regulation versus free market incentive
-How might we consider the role of regulations versus market incentives in facilitating change/progress (in each of the fields)
-Government role [should be?] : incentives rather than regulation
-Subsidies for solar panels, etc.
-Should be a life issue as opposed to a political issue (a human issue rather than one political party or another)
-How do we build consumer and community awareness to drive change?
-What goes into building a green home? What does green mean?
If demand and awareness was there, builders would be more driven to learn about green building.
Education process
-Regulation of standards that consumers can rely on (LEED); consumer confidence
-How do we regulate the standards that consumers can have confidence in?
-Breaking through myths to get reality
-How might we educate your average King County Citizen to do own personal climate action plans?
-Homeowners
-Emotional connection, why should I care? How does it relate to me on a personal level?
-How can I make a difference as one person versus a whole city for one objective
-Make a difference on the individual level. Personal connection, education, feeling like one is making a difference on a personal level
-Putting Climate Action Planning in terms of a quality of life issue for individuals in order to engage the average person (general population isn't as concerned with Climate Action Planning in their every day lives)
-What can be done in order to change people's mindsets?
