Establishing Collaborative Networks to Match Waste or By-products for creating savings, Armstrong
Looks like no one took notes for this session. So, I'll update what I recall for the record! If anyone has edits, please add.
Brooke (me) from RecycleMatch www.recyclematch.com and Lee Milligan from US BCSD (www.usbcsd.org) discussed the similarities and differences in their organization's approaches. Everyone participating in the session was very familiar with byproduct synergy and had participated in some way in such an effort.
All were very much in agreement that byproduct synergy opportunities abound and should be a key element of green manufacturing in the future. The general discussion was that increases in BPS would be good for all involved and should be promoted as much as possible to help the US commercial and industrial businesses adopt this practice more quickly.
USBCSD asks companies to become 12 month members and sponsor locally driven forums with other local sponsors and participants including regulators and government representatives. The forums meet a number of times to find synergies between those represented. These forums tend to be get at the heart of complex problems that require participation from government and other stakeholders.
RecycleMatch offers an online marketplace for the exchange of materials once considered waste by companies which can be repurposed, reused, or recycled by other companies as raw materials that they need. It is free to list materials so there are no up-front costs. However RecycleMatch does take a percentage of any cost savings and/or revenues generated. RecycleMatch is a great solution for companies who have materials but do not have the time or motivation to participate as actively in the solution. RecycleMatch has found both one-time events as well as ongoing waste streams as opportunities to find solutions that work well for all parties.
Other participants in the room (I'm leaving unnamed as not sure if they wanted to be recognized or not) included several people who had excellent first hand experience helping companies identify such opportunities within their own organizations.
