This session was about measurement, green metrics, benchmarking and reporting.
Hosts:
Billy Grayson (wgrayson@icf.com)
Katherine Mowers (kmowers@citidc.com)
Here's a list of environmental & social metrics the group is using or would like to see used:
1. green house gas emissions
2. waste
3. water
4. energy & fuel
5. overtime
6. job creation
7. volunteer hours
8. shares donated
9. health / sick days
10. diversity
11. education
There was alot of discussion about Green House Gas metrics and the Carbon Disclosure Project, and the related Scope 1,2 3 levels. (More information available at: http://www.cdproject.net/)
What do we think of certifications? Lots of discussion about ISO 14001, the Global Reporting Initiative -- GRI (http://www.globalreporting.org/Home)
What's the difference between reporting metrics & management metrics?
What are the best public facing metrics?
Are CSR reports just fluff? We need to get to a shorter set of metrics that can be more easily compared.
Ashoka measures how many times an entrepreneur's work has been replicated by others.
Need to make metrics tangible & actionable.
There were many interests in the room, to discuss specific aspects of metrics (recorded on the left side of the whiteboard). We could probably have a 1 day Unconference event just on these interests, if the right participants were invited (and other people also interested in these specific topics related to metrics).
The hope of this session was to talk about how do we measure success, how do we know that the details of the metrics we are tracking (and reporting -- two different things) are the ones we need to be tracking? In the short time we had together we couldn't get to this. Hopefully this 'how do we measure success' can be folded into future conversations on the topic
