DC-3-How can government green products - Main HallThis is a featured page

(Partial notes for: What should be the government’s role in the advancement of green products? (Stephan Sylvan)
- EPEAT as model - addressing green washing - govt. purchases of products - helping green consumer - semi-public entity to develop seals - expert body - access to green for everyone
- Possible rules:
  • cert. organic food o enforcement of standards
  • ID strongest of standards
  • subsidize greener materials/products o star rating to distinguish most green products
  • defining what is truly green…future vision…convener for defining
- independent scientific body
- government has a role in defining what a true green world will look like instead of maintaining the lines of “it’s better than it was”
  • economy, manufacturing world, etc.
  • cap-and-trade thought of as “making things a little bit better” and not really creating full-scale, necessary change
- need government to mandate waste regulations
- mandatory take-back on waste of final product
  • need to know the lifecycle of the product – otherwise, production is pushed to other countries and associated waste is not counted – assessment of total ecological impact necessary
