DC-2-Breaking Silos Building New Paradigms - Cloak RoomThis is a featured page

Partial Notes from the Cloak Room – (Chris VanArsdale) – Silo Busting
- (Fred Abbey, National Trust for Historic Preservation - trying to green facilities around the country)
- (Enver Finch, Hank Dearden, Chris VanArsdale, Alan Bush, Ken Tersian, Amanda Stone, Bill Brower, Patty Rose...)
- In complex projects, public and private, and government with many options available – how do we get them to think more
broadly and change the way they think about sustainability?
- Move entities into collaboration to come up with better solutions and more sustainable solutions
- The things that motivate people are peer pressure, so where is, and how do you create the peer pressure for sustainability? It’s the exec in the corner office who needs to create carrots and put pressure on others to make change (Hank Dearden)
- Disagreement from F. A. that it’s not all from the corner office
- In addition to sign-off from corner office, change needs to be built into the business system – a literal
component/checklist of business practices
- roles and conception of roles… sustainability needs to be built into those roles
- i.e. health and safety dept. thinks their role is just that and doesn’t take environmental issues as within their scope of \ work - The framework needs to establish the role of sustainability – the definition needs to change so that responsibility is taken on sustainability issues
- How does one go about daily life and get the silos to work towards the end point? Where is the energy focused?
- Assumption of giving authority over authority (?) - Implementation not automatic, despite laws, so it’s necessary to bring authorities together – bring accountability in – to be sure steps are taken to implement sustainability efforts
- “fear of accountability” – need to put pressure on those with authority to implement sustainable practices – successful implementation
