We have a bigger problem around sustainability than we have solutions. Parts of the answers sit in different organizations, countries. Watching for-profit companies compete as aggressively as they ever have but a growing number of cases where they are collaborating.
e.g., Diaggio, distributor of adult beverages. Wanted to place rum distillery in St. Croix. SC gov't said, but waste is bad. D said "but water will be cleaner than what we take". Cruzon had a rum distillery in St. Croix already, process wasn't as clean. in negotiations, D offered to process C's waste water too.
There is something going on in business & competition when you add sustainability into the mix.
New approaches to use information technology to bring more people into the solution. Examples like wikipedia.
Think globally act locally, but the lines are blurring. what's global vs. local and what's acting? 2nd Life work has connected me to new networks, net outreach.
Global Swadeshi - open source networking
How do we build the circuit riders, the people who make the connections?
Connections aren't enough. We need behavior change.
Also timing - when you get connected. How do we do "just in time networking" - connecting when you need it and avoiding information overload. "there is a phase when the door is open and then you shut the door to write the paper"
who sits down with what we do today and makes something happen? we can keep connecting and finding new connections, but then what happens? amount of time that it takes to manage relationships overtakes ability to act.
one of the themes emerging is the ability to organize, cope with the amount of information.
but, knowing google is a good way to manage information - the ability to find things quickly
the notion that silos are bad, isn't helpful. information is relativistic, the problems is to put things in context - very hard.
overwhelmed b/c I don't know what question I want to ask. distracting.
"right now there are 3 conferences in 3 countries i care about all blogging/twittering. its exhausting"
James Moore,
Death of Competition. companies work in ecosystems. "we have to work together while we compete. HP says they will share market-leading technology 6 months after they create it". not just bubble-up but bubble-in from the sides.
Dell competing with one of its retailers, Best Buy, for recycled materials - totally new models of competition are emerging.
Climate Corps internship program and contracting for MBA Fellows to go into companies and work on doing an implementation plan from an energy audit. What can we share, when, by who? Who signs off, process? What channels to use?
NGO / business partnerships are another example of open source, information sharing. Instead of we'll protest you we'll work with you.
Senator Keg in Kenya. beers important but expensive in Kenya. story of 14 men dying from illegal brew. Diaggeo went to Kenya gov't offered to set up local brewers if gov't reduced VAT. gov't said "its fantastic, no one is dying. we'll get rid of the taxes which led to entrepreneurs doing well which increased tax revenue on the other side"
What legal barriers are there? John Wilbanks and eco-patent sharing.
How do we manage collective intelligence? ways to encourage, structure, balance participation. learning from e-government. Online might be able to influence top-down & grassroots.
